They were kept in a hen house, and were strictly white-egg producers - what society wanted in the 60s. Today brown eggs are preferred. We love the variety of birds who produce our eggs.
Bruster is in charge of the flock. He herds the hens in at night and makes sure nothing is harming them. He is pleasant with Gimpy, as he realizes no threat from him. We are pleased they both seem to get along with each other and protect the hens.
THE FLOCK - FREE-RANGING
The chickens are generally kept behind a movable electric netting fence. However, we do move their coop around the yard to give them fresh grass and bugs. When we do, they all are allowed to free-range anywhere in the yard. They take full advantage of their extra freedom.
